Who was Irish Nell?

In 1743 Irish Nell also known as Elizabeth Muckleston was convicted of theft and transported to Virginia in the USA for a period of 7 years for her crime.

Who she was is a total mystery!

Firstly she was recorded as a spinster in the court records. Secondly the Muckleston family had no Irish connections. So how did a single young woman  with a surname from a family with no known Irish connections come to have the nickname Irish Nell?

We have no idea of her age or what happened to her when, or even if, she reached Virginia.

I did wonder if she had assumed this name, perhaps knowing someone with the family surname, but she was in court in 1740 as a witness for the prosecution, perhaps a falling out of thieves as it appears she was a well known fence.

The full story on what is known about Irish Nell can be found under family members but if anyone can identify exactly who she was and what happened to her after she was transported we would love to hear from you.
