Russell Mackleston

Born 5th November 1864 (Shrewsbury)

Married Emily Roberts 1888 (Atcham)

Died 30th January 1934 (West Derby)

Born and Married as Muckleston - changed name.

The Mackleston name is only slightly more than one hundred years old and came into being when two brothers moved away from their birth place and changed their names from Muckleston to Mackleston. The reason for the move and name change is not clear and rumours abound, including one that their father objected to their choice of brides.

The first of the two brothers was Russell, he was a Printer and Compositor. Born on 5th November 1864 in Shrewsbury, he can be found on the 1881 census for Shrewsbury aged 17 and a printer's apprentice. The next information we have is his marriage in 1888 to Emily Roberts in Shrewsbury. In the register his name is given as Russell Mackleston. In 1889 a daughter Florence Edith was born to the couple in Liverpool, where the family had settled and Russell carried on his trade as a printer. Interestingly Florence's name is given as Muckleston on her birth certificate but she married under the name of Mackleston. Russell and Emily had a total of six children two boys and four girls. Only one son lived to adulthood and he did not marry. The Mackleston name was not perpetuated through this line.
