Years married 12 (John & Anna)

from David Stopford July 2010

My grandfather John Joseph Muckleston was trained as a wheelwright and worked at Kings Cross (formerly Battlesbridge) in London, he lost his Job and there are two differing family stories relating to the reason:

1. His employer said "I am not getting involved with motor carriages, they scare the horses and they will not be popular" John lost his job when the business went broke.

2. John was constantly late or absent from work due to his alcohol intake and was sacked.

From my talks with my grandmother Hannah I tend to believe (sadly) the latter. In any event John later set himself up as a bookmaker, whilst never getting arrested he did manage to make a huge loss and had to sell some of the family furniture.

The photo' on page 16 of my mother, Phyllis, sitting between two ladies, the lady on her left wearing a hat is not Hannah Muckleston, I seem to recall that mother said, when she showed me the photo' she was a friend not related, unfortunately I do not recall a name

For the record Frederick Stopford and Phyllis (nee Muckleston) had three Children Joyce, Peter and David - Joyce has two children, one being my nephew who sent the photos', Peter has five children, I have no issue.

In her younger years Hannah Muckleston was a crusader for womans rights and a staunch labour supporter, she became a "Chapel Sister" in the print union and was eventually dismissed for supporting rights for her fellow workers. I do not know the name of the company she worked for although I know it was located in Clerkenwell, London. As a girl my mother Phyllis worked with her mother in the print trade at Clerkenwell and when the company moved to Luton they, worked away from home, travelling to Luton from London on a bus they called "The Straw Hatter". Both Hannah and Phyllis were union members and employed as paper cutters and folders. I remember as a child playing with the bone paper folders and cutters, these were like thin bone rulers with a sharp edge for creasing and cutting the paper.

We had family living in Peabody Buildings in Holborn, this area was bombed during WW11 and Hannah, went to see if (Aunt Em' and family?) were allright, she took my sister Joyce with her and at the site where the bombs had dropped they met HM King George and Queen Mary. ( A war time PR exercise?)The Queen asked if they had had their home bombed and when told that they were just checking on relatives, she sympathised and wished them well.
