Arthur Muckelston

1879 -1960

Arthur was the third son of Harry Muckleston, a builder of Toddington and his wife Jane (nee Crawley). He was born in 1879 in Toddington.

On 24th July 1900 he joined the Army Service Corps at Colchester signing up for 12 years service and becoming Private 16275. His army records show that prior to joining he had worked as a Butcher. He was 20years and 10 months old when enlisting and had never been an apprentice. At this time he was single and had previously belonged to the 3 battalion Bedfordshire Regiment serving in the Militia. He was described as 5 foot 5 inches, 140pounds, Chest 34-36inches, Complection was fresh, Eyes were Grey, Hair Reddish Brown, Religion C of E and he had a scar on his right forearm. His records show that on 18th October 1900 he was admitted to hospital at Aldershot with a sprain to his right ankle, he was in hospital for 29 days but recovered fully.

At the time of the 1901 census he could be found at the "Provisional Battalion and Private Yeomanry, Maida and Mandora Barracks Within the Cleaning Area" he was aged 21 and a Private in the Army Service Corps. On the census his name had been recorded asMackleston and Arthur's surname was spelt in many different ways on official records during his life including the most frequently used Muckelston.

In 1904 Arthur married Alice Mary Harris in Bedfordshire, according to his army records this marriage took place on 8th September. Witnesses to his wedding were W and L Muckleston, the W was probably his brother William. It is possible that they had a child out of wedlock as they had a daughter who was known locally as 'Gladys Harris' born in 1903, she never took the surname of Muckelston so it is possible that she may not have been Arthur's daughter but she was raised with the rest of the family. His first two daughters Doris Irene born 23rd February 1905 and Alice Mary born in July 1907 have their births recorded in the Army Births and Baptism Registers with their fathers regiment given as A.S.C. (Army Service Corps).

By the time his first son Arthur James was born on 8th September 1909 at Chalton, Toddington, Bedfordshire, he had left the army and was working as a Labourer in a Printing Works.

Shortly after war broke out Arthur re-enlisted at Bedford on 8th September 1914, he was examined the next day when his age was given as 34 years and 11 days, his occupation was a Butcher. He was still 5 foot 5 inches but had lost a little weight in the intervening years and was now just 126 pounds; his chest was 37 ½ inches. He had 10 bad teeth and one was missing. Unfortunately his war service was to be brief, he became non effective on 28th December 1914 when he was declared medically unfit on the grounds of a Chronic Middle Ear Infection which was permanent. He was awarded a gratuity of 8s 3d for 13 weeks and childrens allowance of 5s 3d for 5 children.

Including Gladys there were 7 children in all four girls and three boys. We do not know what happened to Gladys, the four remaining girls Doreen, Alice, Beatrice and Ivy all married. Arthur married and had three daughters, Wilfred married and had one daughter and Leslie died shortly after his birth in 1923. Arthur therefore had no male grandchildren with the Muckelston surname.

Arthur died in 1960 aged 81 and his wife Alice in 1973 aged 93.
